Answers to help you understand your options and find the right Christian counselor or coach.
How do I choose a counselor or coach?
Choosing a counselor or coach starts with finding someone who aligns with your values, understands your needs, and offers the kind of care you’re looking for-whether that’s clinical counseling, coaching, or faith-based guidance. It’s also important to consider their experience, approach, and whether you feel comfortable and supported. For a deeper look at what to consider-especially when seeking Christ-centered care-read our guide on choosing a truly Christian counselor.
What’s the difference between a counselor and coach?
Counselors are licensed professionals trained to address mental health concerns, provide diagnosis, and offer clinical care. Coaches are typically unlicensed and focus on personal growth, goal-setting, and guidance rather than treating mental health conditions. Choosing between the two depends on whether you’re looking for clinical support or forward-focused coaching.
What is a pastoral counselor?
A pastoral counselor is someone who provides guidance and support through a Christian, faith-based lens, often integrating Scripture, prayer, and spiritual care into the process. Some pastoral counselors are licensed mental health professionals, while others are unlicensed and serve in ministry or coaching roles. If you are seeking clinical care, diagnosis, or treatment for mental health concerns, it’s important to work with a licensed professional.
Are Christian counselors as qualified as other counselors?
Yes. Licensed Christian counselors hold the same state credentials as any other licensed counselor (LPC, LCSW, LMFT, licensed psychologist), and they meet the same clinical training requirements. The difference is that they integrate their Christian faith with clinical care, offering a faith-informed approach within standard clinical practice. Their credentials are not separate from or lower than those of secular counselors.
