FAQs
Common questions about Faith and mental health
Answers from licensed counselors and trusted clinical sources.
What does Scripture say about counseling?
Scripture affirms the value of wise guidance and seeking support from others. Throughout the Bible, people sought counsel for wisdom, healing, and direction (Proverbs 11:14, Proverbs 15:22, Proverbs 27:17). Counseling can be one way God provides care, helping people process challenges, grow in understanding, and move toward healing and restoration.
Is it a sin to struggle with mental health?
Struggling with mental health is not a sin. It is part of the human experience in a broken world. Many faithful people in Scripture experienced deep sorrow, fear, and emotional distress, including David, Elijah, Job, and Jeremiah. Seeking help through counseling, prayer, and community is a step toward healing, not a sign of spiritual failure.
Why do I feel distant from God?
Seasons of emotional pain, trauma, stress, or depression can make it difficult to feel close to God. Feeling distant does not mean God has abandoned you. Many believers across history, including the Psalmists, have written honestly about spiritual dryness and struggle (Psalm 13, Psalm 22, Psalm 42). Counseling can help you process what you’re going through and reconnect with both your emotional and spiritual foundation.
What is religious trauma, and can counseling help?
Religious trauma describes the lasting harm that can come from negative or coercive experiences in a faith community, including spiritual abuse, harsh teachings about worthiness, or being shamed for asking questions. Many people carry these wounds for years before realizing what they are. A faith-integrated counselor can help you process what happened, separate harmful experiences from healthy faith, and find a path forward, whether that means rebuilding your faith, redefining it, or simply healing.
