I consider counseling to be sacred work and am honored to accompany clients on their journeys. From my first job in the field of mental health, I felt called to the career of counseling. Additionally, I was raised in a Christian home and carry those values with me as the foundation of who I am both personally and professionally.
A few scriptures have become like anchors for me in this work. John 13:34-35 reminds me that love isn’t passive, it’s visible, active, and it’s actually how the world recognizes something different is happening. I want every client who walks into my office to feel that difference. Galatians 6:9 keeps me grounded on the hard days: “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Counseling asks a lot of you emotionally, and this verse is a steady reminder that faithfulness matters even when progress feels slow. 1 Corinthians 12:28-31 affirms that healing gifts, including the clinical and therapeutic ones, are God-given and Spirit-placed. Romans 8:18 is one I often hold close for my clients: present suffering is real, but it is not the final word. And Genesis 30:22 speaks directly to the work I specialize in, the simple, powerful truth that God remembers and speaks to every client who has ever felt forgotten, overlooked, or like their pain went unnoticed.
In practice, I follow my clients’ lead when it comes to integrating faith. For those who welcome it, we may explore scripture, prayer, or the intersection of their spiritual life and their mental health. For others, my faith simply shapes how I show up, with compassion, without judgment, and with a genuine belief that every person who sits across from me carries inherent dignity and worth because we are all created in God’s image. While I rely on evidence-based practice clinically, I also believe that ethically incorporating a faith-based approach is powerful and effective for healing.
