Steven Johnston has been a clinical counselor for over twenty years, specializing in Pastoral Counseling. He earned his counseling degree from Ashland Theological Seminary in 1988 after first completing a ministerial degree at Life Bible College East through the Foursquare Church of the Gospel. His extensive training and experience have equipped him to work with victims of domestic violence, child sexual abuse, and couples seeking marital counseling.

Believing that religious commitment should not be excluded from the therapeutic process, Mr. Johnston pursued his education at Ashland Seminary, ensuring that his approach to counseling remains aligned with his spiritual beliefs. He continues to enhance his expertise through ongoing clinical pastoral studies as a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors.

Recognizing that faith plays a central role in the lives of many individuals, Mr. Johnston integrates spiritual issues from a biblical perspective in a way that is compatible with pastoral counseling and doctrinal principles. When applied to marital, family, and individual concerns, this approach fosters inner healing by supporting clients in utilizing their own religious coping mechanisms.

While there is a clear distinction between religious counseling and integrating spirituality within therapy, Mr. Johnston’s approach focuses on honoring the client’s perspective rather than imposing his own. Research has demonstrated that spirituality and religion can have a positive impact on overall wellness and serve as key sources of support during existential crises. Ignoring these aspects would be culturally insensitive and, in some cases, unethical.

Despite studies showing that religion is a crucial factor for much of the general public, some mental health professionals do not share this viewpoint. This discrepancy can result in misinterpretation or mishandling of religious concerns in the therapeutic setting. Even therapists who personally value religion may choose not to incorporate it into their sessions. Mr. Johnston’s philosophy ensures that this door remains open, allowing clients to address spiritual matters in their personal decision-making and practice of faith within therapy.
