After 20 years of military service, I understood firsthand the demands that work places on a person and their family—the pressure to perform, the emotional distance, and the expectation that leaders don’t show weakness. When service-related disabilities began affecting my mental health after leaving the military, I faced a choice that many Christian men face: keep pretending everything was fine, or admit I needed help.
The stigma around mental health in military culture had taught me that seeking help was weakness. As a Christian, I wrestled with whether pursuing therapy meant I lacked faith or wasn’t trusting God enough. My hesitancy to seek help while in service only compounded my problems once I got out. That’s when my M.A. in Counseling education became more than academic pursuit—it became personal healing. Through my studies and therapeutic journey, I discovered that my desire to follow and be obedient to God could coexist with seeking treatment for my mental health. My faith and psychological healing weren’t enemies—they were designed by God to work together.
My guiding scriptures include:
Psalm 34:5 – There is no shame in bringing our struggles to God or seeking help He provides through others
1 Peter 5:7 – God works through trained counselors to bring healing alongside prayer
Luke 2:52 – Even Jesus experienced growth and development throughout His life
Isaiah 58:6 – God’s heart is for freedom from every form of bondage, including mental and emotional chains
The Great Commandment – We’re called to love God with our whole being, including our mental health
Integrating Biblical Truth into Coaching
I help Christian men understand that seeking professional mental health support demonstrates faith in God’s provision, not lack of faith. Like David in the Psalms, we can bring raw emotions to God. I address shame with Gospel truth, build community over isolation, and focus on integration rather than compartmentalization. My approach weaves biblical principles into evidence-based techniques, showing how concepts like forgiveness and renewal of mind apply to healing. My goal isn’t choosing between faith and therapy—it’s helping Christian men discover that when these work together, they experience the wholeness God intended.
